SUMMER CITY MILK

PRECAUTIONS TAKEN

" Anxious Karori Mother" writes pointing out that allowing the sun to play on city milk during the afternoon distribution may cause it to become unfit for making children's food Which Has to be prepared the following morning. The milk supplied overnight has to carry her through the whole of the next day. "Yesterday was a warm day" she states, "and the milk had turned this morning. The sun streams on the crates where the lorries leave them on the roadside. In order to avoid sickness among children this summer, this matter should bo looked into for health reasons. It is 10 p.m., and I have just received my bottle of milk, which has been carried round in the sun since 3 p.m. " When this matter' was referred to the manager of the City Milk Depot he stated that the milk was not in the sun all the afternoon, as none of it left the factory until 4.45 p.m. The milk, moreover, was not open to the sun's rays, as an insulated cover was placed over the bottles. The milk was not only at a very low temperature when it left the factory, but the bottles were sprinkled with crushed ice. A further precaution was being observed in the hot Weather. A double daily delivery was insisted upon from the farms. The night milk came into the milk station immediately after milking, and was not allowed to stand at the farms overnight. ' - - •■''-. ■'
