GRAND KNIGHT WINNER

The first of the progeny.of the imported racehorse and sire, Grand Knight, to win a race is Gay Marigold, who scored a neat victory in the Ruakura. Stakes at the Waikato Meeting on Monday. Gay Marigold is a two-year-old black filly from the Lucullus mare Queen March, dam of King March, and she was bred by Mr E R. Davis, who races her in partnership with Mr. O. Nicholson. She is trained at Takanini by J. T. Jamieson. In Monday's race Gay Marigold was always nicely placed. Over the early partof the five furlongs she was running fourth, and at the straight entrance she was lying behind' Miss Lorraine and Welcome Lu. A furlong from the post she challenged the leaders and finished strongly to-win by a ■ length from Sea Ruler, who beat March Alone by a length. Miss Lorraine was fourth, followed by Welcome Lu. fcne is stated to be rather small m stature, but is apparently going to be useful. . Grand Knight, the sire of Gay Marigold, was imported from England in 1924 by Mr. E. Riddiford. He is by the Derby winner, Grand Parade, and is from the Polymelus mare Jeunesse, thus being a Haltbrother to Lackham (by Roi Herode), imported at the same time and at present one of the most successful sires in the Dominion. Grand Knight was a highclass performer, winning many races in England and the Dominion .(including the Great Easter-Great Autumn double), but he has yet to be tested as a sire, his oldest progeny being only two-year-olds.
