Amateur effort still continues to attract appreciative audiences, judging by tho large and enthusiastic audience that rilled Nimmo's Hall last night, when Mr. Gordan Short followed up Ills recent successful recital of four- concertos with orchestral accompaniment at the Concert Chamber by auother programme of solos and duos. - Mr. Shortt's pupils' concerts have long maintained a high standard of technical and musical excellence, and this recital was further evidence of the painstaking and artistic pianoforte training that is being, given In Wellington. There was ample demonstration of subtle pedalling, find appreciation of tone quality, and a clear sense of phrasing and rhythm, combined with sure technical attack. In a number of the senior students' performances there was decided concert brilliance. The programme ranged from Bach to the moderns. The latter was clearly evident by the modern love of . rich tone-colour. Additional variety was lent to the programme by a number of Interesting works for two pianos. Gordon Short; "Waltz and Elfin Dance" (Grieg), Theo Nlp'pert; "Canzonetta" (Huerter), Miss Marlon Klrkley; "Polonaise" (Tschaikowsky). Misses P. and A. Goodson. Misses G. Madden and SI.
