FROCKS AT RICCARTON
END OF CARNIVAL WEEK
A dolightful Carnival Week ended on Saturday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club concluded its meeting at Riccarton under pleasant conditions, which were enjoyed by a large gathering of the public, all deeply appreciative of the club's good management and of the interesting programmes presented each day, says the Christchurch "Press."
The weather continued good. The east wind, after several days' rest, returned rather shyly, as if doubtful of its welcome; but, though it grew in strength and keenness as the day wore on, it did not seriously affect the pleasure of the racegoers. The kindly gesture of Rear-Admiral Geoffrey Blake, C.8.. D.5.0., in permitting the band of H.M.S. Diomede to play during the afternoon, won the warmest approbation from the public. All the afternoon groups of men and women stood round the bandstand, enjoying the music, and before the last race Mrs. H. A. Knight personally thanked the bandmaster for tho pleasure his band had given.
The dressing, on the whole, was smart and trim. Fewer chiffon and ninon frocks were worn, and feather plumes were conspicuous by their absence, but many well-cut suits and tailored frocks looked very attractive, worn with plain hats.
The guests of honour were the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) and Mrs. and Miss Forbes, who left late in the afternoon for Cheviot.
