UNUSUAL EXHIBITION
MANY USEFUL ARTICLES
Ample proof of the fact that nothing is completely useless was given yesterday afternoon at the Taranaki Street Free Kindergarten, when the members of the Mothers' Club held an exhibition of "home crafts." Over a hundred people were present to admire and wonder at the ingenuity of the articles produced. Such seemingly useless materials as treacle-tins and old stockings, hedge clippings, and old butter boxes had been cleverly converted into useful and often attractive household articles. This was the first exhibition held by the club, and the object was to raise somo money for immediate needs. Many exhibits were sold, and the remainder were auctioned by Miss E. Scott. The guests, who were received by the principal, Miss E. Wilson, included several members of the Kindergarten Council.
The exhibits were judged by Mr. Crosse (of the Technical College), Mrs. Eichelbaum, and Miss Maddox, and prizes were awarded as follows: Most original (fathers' seetiori), Mr. Hall (Ngaio); most original (women's section), Mrs. Gordon (Berhamporc) Ist, Mrs. M'Lennan 2ud. Article costing tho least but of most value, Mrs. H'lParlane (Hutt road), 1; Mrs. Fraser (Berhampore), 2. The club prizo for the largest number of exhibits wont to tlio JNfgaio mothers. Many,of the articles excited much admiration, numerous covetous eyes being cast by the children on a railway station complete with signal boxes, platforms, and ticket offices, the whole being made from butter boxes. A fern basket made from hedge clippings, which could not even bo burnt, was perhaps the most original, and many useful garments were made from scraps of material.
A dainty tea, organised by Mrs. Piaggi, was served. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Peacock, Misa England, Mrs. Tennant, Dr. Ada Paterson, Mrs. Sims (president of the united clubs), Dr. and Mrs, Corkill and Miss Corkill, Mrs. Gibbs, Miss Seton, Mrs. Miller, Dr. and Mrs. W. Young, Mrs. Kemp, Dr. and Mrs. Alister Young, Miss Crawford, and members of various local committees.
