AGAINST CRUELTY

PROPOSED LEGISLATION

An effort, under the instigation of the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to. Animals, is being made to get an Act passed by Parliament, it was stated at the annual meeting of the Wellington Society on Wednesday. As explained by Mr. G. Mitchell, president of the society, it is hoped by tho Act to eliminate cruelty in the "bobby calf" trade; to make it compulsory to stop the growth of horns m cattle at an early stage; to introduce ii standard system of slaughtering; to deal with the shooting of birds from traps, and tho coursing of hares in enclosures; to pay attention to the transport of stock, which, after being driven all day, -were enclosed in paddocks at night "without water, and then driven on again; and to look into the question of trapping, as it was believed that there was a trap which would not break the logs of animals or otherwise injure them.
