WITH COLOURS UP
YOUNGSTERS SPRINTED
Additional interest was lent to the work at Trentham this morning by the galloping of several two-year-olds, with colours up, in two batches down the straight half-mile of the course proper. The youngsters were lined up at a, barrier and dispatched as on race day. Among the jockeys assisting^ was H. Gray, who made the special trip out to Trentham on his way back from Dunedin to Auckland. The first batch to go to the post comprised H. Telford's pair, the Tea Tray -Ebba gelding (S. Wilson) and the Tea Tray—Lady Violet gelding (W. H. Jones), J. W. Lowe's pair, Lord Jonn (B. J. Mackie) and Sago (A. J. Laikin), T. Pritchard's Eedtop (L. G. binclair). and W. Hawthorne's Golden Horn (H. Gray). Modern was also included to act as a tutor. It was difficult to observe the start owing to intervening trees, but the Ebba gelding and the Lady Violet gelding quickly singled themselves out, the latter being slightly in front all the way, and boating her stablemate by a head. Six lengths back wero Lord John and Sage, practically together, then Golden Horn and Eedtop. lnc time of the leaders was 51 4-ssec. The second group consisted of A. X Browne's Michael Angelo (Jones), J. M'Laughlin's pair, Princo Pombal (Gray) and Ayah (A. B. Lacassi©), C. Pritchard's Milnrow (Sinclair), and W. Hawthorne's pair, Sir Pombal (G. >. Dick) and Cape of Good Hope (W. L. Shand). . They left tho tapes smartly, and Michael Angolo quickly worked to the lead, continuing, to increase his advantage all the way to the post, and beating Prince Pombal and Ayah, together, by a good four lengths. Sir Pombal was next. The other pair were not required to go the full distance. Michael Augelo's time was 49 4-ssec, two seconds better than in tho first section. Jones had the privilege^of riding each section winner. Other two year-olds worked earlier on the two-year-old track, b. J. Reid's Meritor (IP. W. Boxall) and Might (Wilson) sprinted home from tho throe furlongs, but were not timed. The former, who gallops very freely, finished a length in front. Mr. P. A. Findlay's Colossus— Brightly colt (Jones) and A. Goodman's Aroma (Sinclair) wero sprinted together .down tho straight,■ both hitting out pleasingly. Neither of these youngsters lias done much galloping yet.
