LATE SPORTING

ON TRENTHAM TRACK

SEVERAL USEFUL TRIALS

MASTERTON CANDIDATES

Although there was threat of rain at Trentham early last evening, the weather cleared during the night, and conditions wcro ideal for galloping this morning. Tho trial grass, faster than it has been for somo time, was principally used for clock work, as the plough has been scarified several inches down, and, though an excellent pace-'woi-k track, is yet rather slow for faster work. Malayan (G. i\ Dick) finished three lengths'ahead of Kilstar (W. E. Shand) at the end of six # furlongs in lmin lOscc, tho last half-mile in 52see. Ij. G. Morris will probably ride this pair, also I-I. Telford's two-year-old (Ebba gelding), at Masterton. Normandy (H. Hunt), who has recently been on the easy list as the result of having split a heel, was noticed out cantering again on the plough. Foghorn (Dick) had tho worst of the start in her half-mile gallop with White Squall (Shand), but beat her homo with a late run by a good nock in 49 3-ssec, a useful performance. G. Jones's two-year-olds, Rulanut (L. Daly) and Posy (H. Johnstone), galloped on the trial grass, the latter moving away move smartly and leading throughout to register 51scc. Both worked well. Black Mint (L. G. Sinclair) surprised by tmtsprinting Mullabodon (W. 11. Jones) from the three furlongs in 37scc. Tho latter, however, walked tenderly when brought into the centre afterwards. ACTAEON IMPROVING. Aetaeou (Daly) and Cape Gold (Johnstone) did air easy six furlongs on the plough, tho former being well clear at the finish.. The time for the full distance was linin 22 2-sscc, and for the last half-mile 54 l-ssec. Actaeon promises to redeem his early promise yet. Araios (R. J. Mackie) and Peep (Jones) hopped off from the six furlongs, tho former gaining an initial advantage but tiring in tho straight under his heavier weight to bo beaten by two lengths at the finish. The last half-milo took 521-ssec. Movietone (Daly) was a head better than Vitaphone (Johnstone) over six furlongs in lmin 21 l-sscc, the last half-milo in 54 4-ssec. The Sun (I. Tinsloy), galloping with his customary freedom, found Retract (S. Wilson) of little use to him over the closing stages of seven furlongs in lmin 312-ssec, the last half-mile in 52 l-ssec. If L. G. Morris can do near 8.2 he will bo on The Sun at Masterton, otherwise Wilson will have the mount. GAY COURT'S TIVE. Gay Court (A. Simpson), sprinted the first time since Wanganui, slipped over fivo furlongs in lmin 4sec, the last half-mile in 50 l-ssec. Ho was blowing a littlo at tho end, but the gallop should clear him. Cottesmore (A. Jenkins) and Joie de Val (T. Young) went five furlongs together, the former finishing a length in front-in lmin 5 l-ssec, the last halfmilo in Glsec. Tobaeeoland (Jenkins) subsequently went six furlongs alone at a nice pace. Dainty Ways (Shand), looking improved with her racing at Otaki, was sent half v mile on the plough, doing the last three furlongs in 3Ssec. Foulwind- (Johnstone) and Fairwind (Daly) were better matched than they often are, tho former, as on the last occasion when they worked together, finishing in: front, but only by a length, at the end of five furlongs in lmin 51-ssec, the last half-mile in 52sec. • . : Camp (Wilson) traversed half a mile alono in 54sec. Several other horses who were racing at Otaki were allotted steady to strong pace work on the plough. . G. Jones has not settled tho riding of hia Masterton team, but R. W. M' Tavish will be on hand to take the mounts' where the weights suit. Daly will again pilot Fairwind. _ Other riding engagements announced arc:—AY. H. Jones, Ephialtes, Michaol Angelo, Mower, and Araios; R. J. Mackie, Mister Quex; K. Voitre, Duellona; A. Jenkins, Full Mark, and Cottesmore; S. Wilson, Acis, Clangor, and (possibly) The Sun.
