MISSED

MISSED AGAIN

A COMEDY OF ERRORS

: All's well that ends well, and .Mr.. J. M'Combs, M.P., reached Christchureh. quite safely by air,'but not before a little comedy had^ been enacted in the blue vault. :,. In fact, the whole episode was a little comedy?of errors.

The first error- was on the part of the Member, of. '.Parliament in forgetting that the Christchurch ferry-boat now leaves from the Queen's Wharf pending the alteration's to the. regular Ferry Wharf. Through that error he missed the boat on Saturday night, and seemd likely •to miss the Monday night's meeting of' the 'Christchurch' City Council, of .-jvhich/he is a member. That, however, would;hav,e been fatal .in view of the civic situation, and to Christchureh; Mr. M' Coriibs had to go, even if the ferry-steamer, had gone' without him. So.he secured the services of Captain G. L." Stedman,- and of a Wellington Aero Club: Moth. Between them they got Mr. M'Combs to Christchurch on Monday morning. The flight took just over two hours;- '.including a stop at Blenheim, and it was "accomplished in perfect wnather.

But in Christchurch itself the comedy of errors was continued. The Mayor (Mr. D. O. Sullivan, M.P.) had been informed of the flight. He went out'to the Sockburn ; aerodroine for the purpose of discussing the council estimates with his colleague, and while ;he was waiting for the" aeroplane to arrive SquadronLeader Findlay suggested that they should go up in a Moth and-meet the others. So up- they went, into the clouds, and headed northwards. Amberley was passed, and still there was no sign of the south-bound aeroplane. Mr. Sullivan began to have grave fears for the safety of Mr. M( Combs, so the pilot turned about and set course for Christchurch, in the hope that nothing had happened. Great was their surVise when they landed to learn that Mr. M'Combs had arrived two-minutes after the Mayor had taken off; the two aeroplanes had missed.each, other ;in the cloud-bank.' ...' ~'&jf>' ;■'■ ,
