BRITAIN'S OFFER
FAVOURABLE COMMENT
SAVING HOOVER PLAN
.' (British Official Wireless.) (Keccivcd 13th July, 11 a.m.) ; 'RUGBY, 12th July. A letter addressed by the British Treasury to the Bank of International Settlements announcing the decision of the British Government to refrain from claiming any payments due from Germany on 15th July under tho Young Plan "with the object of giving immediate relief to tho crushing difficulties in Germany in accordance with President Hoover's proposal" is tho subject of favourable comment in the Press.
Under ilio heading, "British Empire's Lead," tho "Daily Telegraph" says:'"A difficult and anxiotis sihia■i'wn will ~be eased not less morally than TiiatßriaUy by ibe action which Iho JJritish and- " pciminimx Govcriiiiicuts
have taken in regard to Gorman reparation payments falling due- on Wednesday next." '
This expression of relief finds an echo in most other comments where anxiety is apparent lest the finest curative effect of.'the Hoover gesture on depression has boon lost in the subsequent 'difficulties of detail. Hopo is expressed that th.o British load will bo .immediatoly f ollowod by other c'roditor Govcrnmonts. The view is that every day's delay in giving practical effect to the Hoover plan can only aggravate the already serious. situation with consequences disastrous for Europe and tho world.
