PETONE'S NARROW WIN.
Petone gained a narrow win over University at the Petone Recreation Ground^ which was very heavy. Petone, in the first spell, had a strong sun in their eyes, and University, playing good football, put on the points, although some of their tries werg very lucky ones. The Petone backs were not very effective," due to the absence "of Nicholls and Pollock. The Petone forwards, by their work in the second spell, proved the decisive factor in the match. ■ . : The teams were:— Petone: Lainbourne; Valk, Huxtable, Elyy; M'Gurk, Whitley; Bricej Carr; Lambourne, Lind, Fell, Martin, Reid, Crane, Wilson. University: Cormack, Mackay, Ramson, Ruru; Mulvihill, Leitch; Pacey, Simmers; Elliott, Beaumont, Dixon, Blacker, piedrich, Hope, Hart. ' Petone pressed from the start, University having to force down. After University had cleared to the half iway line Huxtable secured from a.short.kick, made a great run to within ten yards of the line, and passed to Fell, who scored. From play some time afterwards in Petone s territory, Cormack "potted" a fine goal, putting University in the lead. After a Uni-versity-passing rush Mackay made a run. His pass infield, however, was knocked on. Ramson then kicked the ball over the line, and following up, fell on it. He converted his own try. A little later Ramson, by following up, was able to get another try, which he converted himself. After an unsuccessful attempt at a penalty goal, Petone had a passing bout that ended m Elvy being thrown out. Mulvihill .started a passing rush in Pdtone's twenty-five and passed to Ruru, who get off downfield. He drew Elvy and another Petone backhand just as he was caught he passed to Simmers, who was able to score without trouble. The half-time score was! University 17, Petone 3. . , ' Shortly after the resumption of play Crane kicked a penalty for Petone. Petone cleared from a subsequent University attack, and when they attacked in turn Mulvihill led University away. Then, from a short passing rush a little later, M Gurk "sold the dummy" beautifully to a University back, and scored. University were able to have a short spell on attack, but from then onwards almost until the end of the game they were kept striotly on tne defensive. Finally, from a prolonged letono attack, Lind scored near the posts. Huxtable converted. A Petone player nearly scored a few minutes later, but a scrum was ordered. Petone were now going great guns, and University's breaks were only of a-temporary nature. In the closing portion of the game, Huxtable secured from a passing rush, kept going on his own, and scored. He converted his own try. University came away with a, great burst, but to no effect. The final score wasi Petone 19, University 17. Mr. 11. Leith was the referee.
