Wily forwards who supplied a nippy half-back with the ball from practically every line-out and from a iarge number of the scrums, and a back division which showed wonderful control of the ball in spite of the rain-sodden ground, made Poneke a very strong force at Newtown Park in the match' against Eastbourne. Poneke won, after a game packed full of incident, by 15 points to 8. Territorially Poneke had the better of the game in both spells, but that is not to say Eastbourne were easy game. That was far from being the position. The team as a whole played well, and there was sufficient in th<s;r play to indicate that on adry groun-J they possibly1 would have given Poneke a big fright, and, maybe, notched a Win.
