BOWLING

DOMINION COUNCIL

IMPORTANT, MATTERS

Tlie annual meeting of the council of the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association was held in Chridtchurch lust week. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president (Mr. H. 15. Oakey, of Cluistchiirch) congratulated the Auckland executive on the manner in which the last Dominion tournament had been conducted. There was a, small deficit on the year's operations, but that liad been caused by a donation of £100 lo the Hawkes Bay Bowlers' Relief Fund. Ho did not think that the council should build up a huge credit balance, but should merely liavo enough finance .to carry on the work. Mr. H. G. Mayer (Wellington), in seconding the adoption of the report, also congratulated the Auckland Centre on the manner in which the tournament had been conducted, lie referred to the excellent work done by Mr. J. Pascoe, immediate past president, and Mr. G. L. Gladding, who was secretary at the time of the tournament. The increase of 280 bowlers during the year was an achievement, and he appealed to members to see that, during the difficult period now being experienced, bowlers were not allowed to' drop out of the game, but that they should be helped to continue as players. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. Mr. !•'. J. Good ' (Christchurch) moved that tli.a council confirm the donation of £100 to the East Coast Centre for the reconstruction of, their greens, and that all further donations, irrespective. of amount, be handed over to the East Coast Centre. He thought that the £400 asked for by the centre was very modest, and he felt that if more money was available, it should bo handed over. Mr. Good congratulated the Auckland Centre on. the way in which it had'met the East Coast emergency, stating that the promptness of the donations had had a very fine effect. Mr. D. C. Cameron (Dunedin) seconded the motion. ' Mr. Mayor said that the Wellington Club had released its greenkecper in order, to assist with the re-turfing of the Hawkes Bay greens. . Mr. G. L. Gladding said that it would cost £700 to reinstate the Hawkes Bay greens, and the East- Coast Centre had.' been very diffident in asking even for £400. He was strongly in favour of any amounts over' £400 which were received being handed over to the East Coast Centre. ' . ... j The motion was carried unanimously. STAMPING OF BOWLS. Complaints regarding the stamping of bowls were voiced by Mr.. Mayer, who ! said, that after a few weeks' ■use, the date was illegible. ■■~-' The matter was referred to .ttio executive, with power to act, Mr. Mayer being appointed to act with the executive in the matter. . . ( ' ' A letter from Imperial Chemical In-., dustries, Ltd., in regard to experimental] work on grass plots was considered, and it was decided that the executive be permitted to spend up to £10 in sending out to clubs information regarding the work done. .. ' • CHANGE OF NAME. Upon the motion of Mr. Gladding, it was decided to change the name of the association from the "Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association" to the."New Zealand Bowlirig Association." ' ' The rules were revised in accordance. with various recommendations, and after amendments had been _ made they were confirmed by the council. ; ■ DOMINION TOURNAMENT. The council decided, that-the .order of play at the Dominion tournament/.to bo held in Christchurch' on 11th January, should be the same as at the last tournament at Auckland. . . ' ■ ■ ■■ I Mr. 1\ J. Good moved that the annual Dominion tournament, be held in ithe second week in February. Ho said that to adopt these dates would be an experiment, but in the past there had been a distinct clashing betweeu the Christmas tournament at Tiinaru and the Dominion tournament, si few days later. To" hold the tournament in February would allow a fair amount of time between the two tournaments. • ... . >» '', . Mi\ J. Paseoe (Auckland), asked if Mr. Good was taking into consideration the Rotorua tournament, Which, was heldi at the beginning of February. -' .._ . Mr. J. Moyes seconded the motion.' The president said that there would be a. danger in altering the dates. sides the Rotorua tournament in .February, there ■ was also the West Coast tournament, which was attended by many South Island.bowlers. ■• ' ; Mr. S. M. Stone (Wellington) said that many North Island bowlers would not attend if the Dominion:.tournament were held in February. It.'would be fatal to its success. ■■' ''■ ! ,', ' ,< ; ' -i Mr. G. L. Gladding (Auckland) moved as fin. amendment, that the tournament be held in the third week: in January... A change in the dates would aloet the Taranaki tournament, which had been held, in the past,'-immediately at the conclusion of the Dominion tournament, said Mr. E. Dingle (Taranaki). Ho could sec no reason for tiny change. ■ i Mr. D. C. Cameron (Dunedin) moved, as a further amendment,' that the dates be as in tlie past. . '. ~' . '. Mr. Good said that in considering the dates of tournaments, the Dominion event should take, priority. ,If necessary, the local centres should alter their dates to make them suit. • ..-. Mr. Gladding's amendment was lost, and Mr. Cameron's amendment was carried. ORDER OF PLAY. Mr. W. Efford (Christehureh) moved, and Mr. J. Kershaw (Wellington) 'seconded/ that the singles and/pairs be played in the first week, and the rinks be commenced at the beginning of the second week.. Mr; Good supported the proposal, saying that such an arrangement would be. for the benefit of the play and the players. . If. they adopted that suggestion, said Mr. Gladding, he doubted very muck if the tournament could be completed in a fortnight. The plan might also affect the financial part of the tournament, for some players might enter only for the singles and pairs, and then go away at i the end of the week, while others might only arrive in time, for tho rinks competition. An amendment, that tho order of play be the same as: last year, was moved by Mr. Moyes. This would provide for two days' singles, two days' pairs, and then the rinks games. The amendment was carried. A Wellington remit, that it be a recommendation to the Dominion council that two games a day of twenty-five heads each be. played in the section games in tho rink championship at the next Dominion tournament,'was carried. It was decided J,hafc the singles games be on the automatic two-lite system,, with provision for five games dn the second day if necessary, and that the pairs bo conducted on the same system as last year. Conditi6ns for tho rinks tournament we're fixed on the same lines as last year, with the provisionl that rinks •with six wins or more. in. sectional play qualify.
