NEW ZEALAND BATTING

VIVIAN IN GREAT FORM CENTUEY IN EVEN TIME (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Special to Press Association.) (Received 9th July, 9 a.m.) HARROGATE, Sth July. Por the commencement of the cricket match, New Zealand v. Yorkshire, the weather was overcast and the wicket easy. Brilliant batting by Vivian placed New Zealand in a good position before rain during the tea adjournment caused play to be abandoned for tho day. At that stage New Zealand's score was 217 for four wickets. The following are the teams: — New Zealand: Dempster, Weir, Blunt, Vivian, Talbot, Page, Lowry, Allcott, James, Merritt, and Matheson. Yorkshire: Holmes, Oldroyd, Mitchell, Leyland, , Greenwood, Barber, Wood, Dennis, Pislier, Maeaulay, and Verity. The exclusion, of Sutcliffe is due to the fact that this player is restiug in view of forthcoming important county matches. Dempster and Weir opened for New Zealand, and started slowly against Maeaulay and Dennis (right-hand medium pace) and Verity and Fisher (left-handers). Dempster batted attractively until lie was caught behind the wicket in attempting a cut. Blunt, who was bowled in the last over before lunch, showed good form, and from one of Verity's overs he realised four fours. Vivian started brightly after lunch, and with a magnificent leg shot he hit a ball from Verity out of the ground. Weir was sound and unruffled until ho hit out to a full toss from Fisher and was bowled. Meanwhile, Vivian completely collared the-bowling, playing delightful shots all round the wicket. He scored 101 out out of 138 runs in one hundred minutes, and was caught in the slips from a miss-hit. Although he gave a chance early, Vivian played one of the most attractive innings of the tour to date. His score included four sixes and twelve fours. The Yorkshire bowling was never difficult. Vivian and Blunt played Verity's left-handed spinners with the utmost confidence. The Yorkshire fielding was excellent. The attendance was 6000. Details:— NEW ZEALAND.. First Innings.
