R. D. JONES HAS A TURN

*Fhe Eieearton trainer, F. B. Jones, Had three horses at Oamara on Saturday, and had an excellent record. Belvoir and Dumaven were ■winners, and Taragona ran third, a position that might have been improved had he missed trouble on the journey. None of these horses has accepted for the first day at Trentham. but at least one of them, Belvoir, may be on hand for the Trial and Novice Stakes on the final days. _ Belvoir's win at Oamaru was jus iirsiv but it was freely anticipated after his two seconds in his only two- previous starts. The field he beat was not. strong, but ho played with the-opposi-tion. He is a big fellow, who may not be easy to train, but there is great scope for improvement, and ho may reach the best class next season if he remains sound. In tho meantime he should be seen to advantage if ho makes the Trentham trip, unless the going should , be particularly heavy. ' ■ ,i Dtinravcn, the younger full-brother to Limerick, was also responsible for an attractive effort when ho heat, his opponents decisively in a punishing finish in the Farewell Handicap. He seemed unable to pace it with the leaders in the early stages, but he put in a great run in the straight, and he was travelling very fast over the final furlong. On this showing he may add to his record soon over a longer journey, though he is never likely to reach the very best open class. , , . Taragona should not be condemned for his failure in the Winter Hack Handicap. H« was mixed up in a scramble that occurred leaving the straight, and, being i*B • had position, he had to cover a lot of (pound later in the contest. Under th« circumstance.1?, he did well to run third. His engagement in the, .Whyte Handicap at Trentliam was not continued, but it is still on tho cards;-that, he will come north for tho final days if ■Belvoir makes tho trip.
