CHEESE REFORM

Dealing with the cheese quality problem, Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co. have received a report from Messrs. Trengrouse and Nathan, London, in which it is stated: ."Shorn of all unnecessary trimmings, the only practical way to"commence to again build up the reputation of New Zealand cheese is to have it sold strictly on its merits at the time o£ its arrival in this country." It is suggested that no grade marks and no grade_ notes should be allowed to arrive. It is not recommended that grading should cease in New Zealand, as it must be of considerable use. "The trade here feels that it is impracticable to grade cheese in New Zealand satisfactorily for this market. . . . The 3d per lb difference between the price of finest Canadian cheese and finest New Zealand cheese does represent in a very practical way the measure by which the grade of finest New Zealand cheese falls below what is required. It is quite obvious that very drastic measures will have to be taken with the New Zealand cheese industry before any recovery can .be brought about."
