CLOUDBURSTS AND FLOODS

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

CHICAGO, 20th Juno.

A blast of withering heat, accompanied in- various sections by floods, cloudbursts, and terrific electrical storms, has struck the Mid-Wostern States.

Doaths from lightning, heat, and drowuings reached a heavy total, whilo prostrations in the Chicago area alone numbered hundreds.

Three States have reported temporatures well above 100 degrees. The property, damage is extensive, trees have been destroyed, and communications have been disrupted, as was the traffic on tho Great Lakes, especially on Lake Brio, whero the customary patrol boats, instead of performing their usual duties, passed the day rescuing persons from drowning and salvaging damaged boats.

A tram was blown oft' its tracks at Cleveland.

Much damage and threes deaths occurred when a lift structure at a Columbus (Ohio) factory was blown down. The storm moved eastwood throughout the day. In the ato evening Ponnsylvania was plunged into darkness, and when the torrential rains arrived in Pittsburgh tho streets and basements were flooded, and the lighting services were destroyed.
