NOTABLE GATHERINGS

Most fortunately for all concerned in the opening of Parliament yesterday, the weather made a temporary clearing for the occasion, and sunshine added -much to the' general brightness, while making things more pleasant for tho crowd which' inevitably assembles to look on whatever the weather muy be. Indoors the galleries were illled us usual with onlookers, and the pleasant annual Ministerial party followed the_ opening ceremony, when the Prime Minister and Mrs. Forbes received many hundreds of their guests. IN THE'COUNCIL CHAMBER. 'Her Excellency Lady Bledisloe arrived a little before His Excellency, and was ia a charming costume of palest.turquoise . embossed chenille, tho short coai edged with white fox fur, and the neck trimmed with, tho same. Her toque was a swathed one of the same shade of velvet embossed with silver'thread, and finished in tho front with a diamond brooch. The bouquet handed to her by Sir Walter Carncross ("Mr. .Speaker"), was of mauve and pink orchids/ fuschias, and maidenhair 'fern, tied with pale salmon pink ribbon. Mrs. Forbes, who was presented with a bouquet of yellow and' brown orchids, pansies, and carnations, tied with henna ribbon, was in honey-coloured lace over georgette, with "summer fox" fur trimming and a black velvet hat. The other ladies on. tho floor of the House included Lady Carncross (winocoloured embossed, broche and toque to match, grey fuTs),.Lady Statham (black costume and coat trimmed with grey Persian lamb, and black iiat), Lady Si&ey (black ring velvet with sable necklet and black upturned hat), Lady Myers (deep prune colour pin-spot ensemble, prune hat), Mrs. Veiteh (black costume trimmed with deep black fur), Mrs. Cobbe (black and white frock, black coat, with posy of autumn, leaves, black hat with touch of colour at the back), Mrs. J. Their Excellencies and party came later to the reception, Lady. Bledisloe wearing an ensemble of lettuce groen, the coat trimmed with fur, and a turban hat to tone.-

The tea table was charmingly arranged with flowers '. .in yellow and mauve tones.

A Very pleasant little programme was given by Mr. Herbert Wood and. Miss Hilda Chudley, who sang, and-Miss Jcssiß Forbes, who gave a recitation. A good orchestra also played acceptably duriug' the afternoon.
