EXHIBITION OPENED

Last evening at the* rooms of the New Zealand Academy' of Fine Arts, the first exhibition-of the New^Zealand Ex-Libris Society was opened by the president (Mr. Johannes C. Andersen) in the presence of a fair- attendance, tho visitors, including the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes, Prime Minister, and Mrs. Forbes. The collection of book-plates is a large and representative one, and contains many from. Great Britain, -the Continent, Australia, and New Zealand. In an article published in the "Evening Post" of Tuesday,/the object of ExLibris societies was explained, detailed information was given as to the various* classes of plates, and reproductions of some plates of royalty were" given. -A catalogue, available at the Art Gallery, gives. particulars of the examples on view. The pamphlet also contains an Informative introduction, by the president. • .'. .'■.'.-.. In declaring ,the. exhibition open, ttie president stated that book-plates sometimes bore a crest or coat of arms, and in other cases were of pictorial designs suggested or • approved by the owners of the books in-which they are inserted. Mr. Andersen referred-to a washdrawing lent by His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Blcdisloe, which plate, he said, was a fine example .; of the armorial type. ■, He mentioned the work of Mr; W.. P. - Barrett, a New Zealander resident iii England, who had done'some fine work, and whose1 plate for Queen Alexandra was on the wall.
