BOOK-PLATES
EXHIBITION OPENED
Last evening at the* rooms of the New Zealand Academy' of Fine Arts, the first exhibition-of the New^Zealand Ex-Libris Society was opened by the president (Mr. Johannes C. Andersen) in the presence of a fair- attendance, tho visitors, including the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes, Prime Minister, and Mrs. Forbes. The collection of book-plates is a large and representative one, and contains many from. Great Britain, -the Continent, Australia, and New Zealand. In an article published in the "Evening Post" of Tuesday,/the object of ExLibris societies was explained, detailed information was given as to the various* classes of plates, and reproductions of some plates of royalty were" given. -A catalogue, available at the Art Gallery, gives. particulars of the examples on view. The pamphlet also contains an Informative introduction, by the president. • .'. .'■.'.-.. In declaring ,the. exhibition open, ttie president stated that book-plates sometimes bore a crest or coat of arms, and in other cases were of pictorial designs suggested or • approved by the owners of the books in-which they are inserted. Mr. Andersen referred-to a washdrawing lent by His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Blcdisloe, which plate, he said, was a fine example .; of the armorial type. ■, He mentioned the work of Mr; W.. P. - Barrett, a New Zealander resident iii England, who had done'some fine work, and whose1 plate for Queen Alexandra was on the wall. The exhibition is composed of several separate collections, and includes ovtir 700 plates. ■'■; ■•■■■- ■'■ ' •
