STAND-BY PLANT
POWER FOR CANTERBURY
Good progress had been made by the Public Works Department in installing the Diesel engine station at Lyttclton which is to act as a standby plant for the Canterbury electric power system, according to an. announcement by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. B. Taverner). "Unless any serious setback, at present unforeseen, occurs," said the Minister, "the end of the present imonth should see two machines ready for operation and a'third machine turning over on its own power preparatory to'drying out. Wo. may safely anticipate that by the end of July four machines will bo ready for operation should the necessity arise." Asked what was the, present* position at Lake Coleridge, Mr. Tavernor stated that at present tho lake level was about throe feet higher than it was at this timo last year. "Satisfactory as that is," said the Minister, " the position is really better than that indicated by a three foot rise in lake level, for the stream flow into the lake is much better than it was at this time last yoar, and Canterbury peoplo uoed have no misgivings concerning electricity supply during this winter."
