(Continued from first column.) about seeking aid and guidance from si Higher Power than any we can conceive, But surely we have had humiliation, enough and trials enough to prove the utter futility o£ our own means for get* ting .out of the difficulties in which we, in common with many other nations, are now floundering. Some individuals, no doubt, have already felt the need oE prayer on behalf of our own country aud other countries, and they have not been silent before the Throne of Grace. Bufe the thought I am endeavouring to express is for general prayer, because our troubles are general; a prayer acknowledging our: own shortcomings, presumption, or brag* ging, if you will; our great need of courage and vision in these days of fear _ and obscurity; and our promise, with divine aid, of amendment and a better ordering of our lives and readjustment of. oue principles to those in accord with Authors ity above all human authority. Such a general prayer, I believe, would nois gain anything by being organised or direct" ed by committees or submitted to meet* ings. The idea in view is a purely calm, unemotional, and strictly personal effort a matter for the closet, not for the a#« sembly hall. In much lesser issues «rt> dence is obtainable of direct answer to prayer—not coincidences —and of tn» dynamic force of prayer. Why should not a general prayer, from thousands, b# less effectual if offered in all humility anJl in recognition of our great need of cour» age and vision?
