Forwards- and backs on both sides worked with a will, and the strenuous encounter gave rise to much enthusiasm on the part of the spectators. The final stages of the game were full, of excitement, Petone then requiring only a score to gain the lead. Wellington, however, were not to be mastered, but while their defence held good they were nearly deprived of success when.a drop-kick by Nicholls sent the ball only a yard outside the posts. On the day's play Wellington deserved their win. Petone, however, indicated that they were capable of playing their usual prominent part in the championship. In view of their big win on the previous Saturday, Old Boys were expected to extend Hutt at the Hutt Recreation Ground, but the home team succeeded in registering a very convincing victory. Eastbourne improved to' the extent of being able to win by three points from Poneke at Petone, and Oriental's advance was such as to cause Athletic to suffer another heavy defeat. University started well against Berhampore, but the latter provided stout opposition late in the game. Miramar were not easily overcome by Marist at Kirbirnie, and the latter gained a win by only five points. St. Patrick's College Old Boys and Johnsonville continued on their winning way in the senior B grade.
