SUEZ CANAL DUES ISSUE
GOVERNMENT HELPLESS
(BritisH Official Wireless.) (Received 23rd May, 11 a.m.) BTJGBY, 22nd May. The House of Commons adjourned to-day for the Whitsuntide recess. The session will be resumed on 2nd June. Questions raised on the motion for adjournment included that of the Suez Canal dues. Replying- to a suggestion that the' Government should, through, the Eng- ■ lish directors, press for a revision, of the high transit charges, against which the Foreign Secretary, had received protests from sis maritime Powers of Europe, Mr. W. B. Smith stated that the Government had no direct voice in the company's administration and had no authority to demand what might be desirable in the interests of shipowners and commerce generally. Within, the limits of its powers and opportunities the Government had done everything possible to help in the direction, suggested.
