HELP NEEDED

MONEY AND CLOTHING

RESPONSE TO APPEAL

A MATTER OF URGENCY;

Though it may take some little timo for the various committees set up to complete their arrangements for tho distribution of food, clothing, etc., to those in need, the most urgent cases are' already being met by one.or other of the bodies, which are parties to tho main scheme. The first needs aro money and supplies of foodstuffs ami garments of all kinds, for it is obviously not of much use to set up central and district control unless there arc means 1 for the purchase of supplies. In addition to the general appeal for funds mado by tho Mayor through tlia 1 Press direct appeals are being mada for contributions in money or kind by a number of ladies and gentlemen in the city and •residential areas. Contributions acknowledged to data aro as follows:—• MAYOR'S FUND £ s. d, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Kwcn 50 0 9 Mr. nnd.Mrs. .fi. A. Troup ..' 10 0 9 Mr. A. W. Newton 10 10 0 Mr. Is. Galloway, of the Red Cross Society, the stock of goods which the society usually hah on hand at this time of the year for distribution to those in need was practically exhausted by the need of earthquake sufferers; in fact, a fortnight ago there was nothing more to givo out, and the clothing depot was closed, though the most urgent cases were met as far as possible. Last week an article in "The Post" drew attention to the need of more .articles of clothing, and sufficient camo to hand on Monday and Tuesday to enable tho depot to be opened again between 9 o'clock and noon on Wednesday. Ther» were over 300 callers, and all were fitted out to some extent. There is still, and' will continue to be forborne time, a very real need of clean, -wearable, warm clothing for men, women, and children, and for boots and shoes of jjll sizes. There are proper facilities at "the Dixon street depot for fumigation, but clothing cannot bo washed: underwear, socks, etc., should bo washed before being packed up. There are many people who cannot help as substantially as they may wish, in monetary contributions, but by packing up and taking along to tho depot useful, but not wanted, garments they will make hard times just a little less'hard for someone else.

In cases where the goods cannot b« delivered to the Dixon street depot, the society wijl arrange to have them called for, the carriers of Wellington having made a very handsome offer in that regard, but this plan is intended more for large packages than for small. To ask a carrier to burn a gallon of benzine to call for a pair of socks and :i singlot 'is to rather spoil the good intention. The Bed Cross, charged now with tho collection of all clothing under tbo co-ordinated scheme, needs all that can be taken or sent along.
