PAYING THE LEVY

POST OFFICE KEPT BUSYi

MORE PROSECUTIONS

During the past few days there hay» been many callers at the various- post offices in the Dominion for the purpose of ■ paying their March instalment of the unemployment levy. It is possible that their action has been prompted by the publication of details regarding prosecutions in Wellington, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Timaru, ajid elsewhore for non-payment, or it, may b» that the matter has merely been overlooked. Whatever the reason, it is satisfactory to know that proseejutions will be necessary in comparatively few cases. There is a statutory fine of 6d .in cases of default for more than ono "month in the payment, of the levy.

In one provincial centre tho payments reached 92 in one day, and in tha four cities tho record totals for a day were well over the hundred. Many of these were payments in advance, and others were belated payments of th 9 December levy. Further-prosecutions are pending, and those who have overlooked tho duty imposed upon them by tho Unemployment Act would bo wise to fulfil that dutf as promptly as possible.
