FINAL CHANCE
PRISONER WARNED
In sentencing Daniel Minahan, aged 51, in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon on a charge of breaking and entering and theft, Mr. Justice Reed warned the prisoner that he was liable.to be declared an Labitual criminal. He did not propose to adopt that course this time, but it was probably the last chance Minahan would receive. The prisoner was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by two years' reformative detention in order, that.-he might get drink thoroughly out of his system. Mr.. H. M'Cormick, who appeared for Minahan, said that in view of the prisoner's previous convictions there was little he could urge upon his Honour in mitigation. .Counsel pointed out that Minahan apparently was very much/ addicted to drink, and that there had been some evidence at the trial that on the night the crime was committed he had been drinking. He had been instructed also that the prisoner contributed to the support of his widowed mother in England, Another matter he wished to mention was that Minahan had been in prison three months awaiting trial. ,- .
