Basketball

Saturday's weather proved ideal for the opening day of the competitions o£ the Wellington Basketball Association. The fitness of the players was exceptional for the first game of the year, and augurs well for the keenness of the teanis.: Although good team work was at many times lacking, the standard of the play, taken as a whole, was ahead of that at the beginning of previous seasons, and gave evidence of an increase in the number of teams which now havo regular coaching and team practice. . . SENIOR A. . Wesley v. Awatea: Wesley, 1930 champions, missed the services of H. Roberts, E. Bell, and E. Cooke, and as could bo expected, their exhibition, on Saturday was not up to their standard of last year. At the commencement of the game both toanis played scrappily —and very few concerted movements succeeded in taking the ball to the goal. Wesley's forward third lacked cohesion, excellent passing from the centro sending the ball to the forwards, only to have Awatea defence intercept from badly directed passes._ Although Awatea played strongly at times, Wesley defence and centre were too sure, and the Awatea forwards wero too well hampered to enable thorn to score. M. Frederic did yeoman service for Wesley, her sure defence spoiling many an attack at goal. Improving greatly in the second half, Wesley forwards at times gave brilliant exhibitions at passing, and succcded in gaining 10 goals to their opponents' I.' Mr. Froud was in charge of the game. Kia Ora v. Brymay: For their first match in senior A grade, Brymay, senior B champions last year, fielded a strong nino, and in the first spell of their match against Kia Ora held their own. Over-keenness and excitement spoiled a number of their passes, but when they have settled down to senior games this team should gain a. good place in the grado. Kia Ora started raggedly and took somo time to settle down to sure passing. In the second half, their game improved, and several excellent passing movements resulted in deserved scores. The final score was Kia Ora 15, Brymay 6. Miss Armstrong referoed. Wellington East Old Girls v. Training College: Wellington East have again tho services of B. Eawle,- forward, who last year played for Training College and gained representative honours. Although this team won by the substantial margin of 22 goals to 9, Training College at times had them fully oxtended, and play generally was fairly even, Training College jnst. lacking the finish necessary to score. .Good team work by the Wellington Bast team, together with surer shooting, gained them the victory. Miss Armstrong was roTechnical College- O.G. v. Y. ■ Gym.; This match was half over -, before Y. Gym. struck form. Technical having a lead of' 6 goals to nil at half-time. In tho second spell, Y. Gym. attacked woll, and succeeded in gaining six goals to Tochnical's 2, the latter winning by 8 goals to 6. Technical showed improy-, cd team work, and should do well in the comeptitions if they continue to improve. Y. Gym. in tho second half showed their capabilities, and should do better in'iifoiv next match. Mr. Frond refcreed. • ■ ■ . - ■ 'Varsity v. Gilby's. 'Varsity wero wol) on form on Saturday, and had a runaway victory over Gilby's/ winning ,by 39 goals to 8. 'Varsity gained practically a goal a, minute, and .if,- they- oon retain, their present form, ■ should be strong , challengers for the' senior championship. It will be interesting to sec if they can keop up the samo standard against a stronger team". .Gilby/s wero on the defensive tlie whole time, and woro never able to stave off the repeated attacks of tho 'Varsity forwards, all •three of whom shone in brilliant concerted passing. M. Line showed a return to her form of 1929; when she was a member of tho Wellington representative team, Mrs. H. Miiir referced. EXECUTIVE MEETING. The fortnightly mcbting of tho cxocutive of the Wellington Basketball Association was held on Tuesday night. Mrs. H. D. Muir presiding. Thoso present wero Mesdames "R. 'M. Smith, A. Muir, Misses E.
