CONTRACT WORK NOT FAVOURED

M'Keen, M.T\, Labour candidate for Hie Cil\r Council, gave a comprehensive review o.l' the City Council undertakings, nnd said (hat more work- was accomplished during the past four years than during any similar period in the history
of the city. The major works carried out by contract alone amounted to nearly half a million pounds. Although, he admitted, all the jobs were, satisfactorily done, ho was of the opinion that all general works should be carried out by the council's employees either by day labour, or where advisable, by cooperative labour contracts. This would necessitate, a complete re-organisation of the Works Department t.6 ensure the most modern methods of operation being adopted. "I am definitely opposed to lotting out the city's work by private contract, "continued the speaker. "Experience has shown that the council's employees can carry out the work just as efficiently and at, considerably less cost, than by private contracts."
