SHAKESPEARE EVENING
Some well-known scenes from Shakespeare were enacted last evening hy the dramatic circle of the Lyceum Club. The elubrooms, which were attractively decorated with vases of pink and white cosmos and greenery, were, well filled with members. ■ The programmo was arranged and directed by Miss Hard-inge-Maltby, who gave a brief sketch of each play leading up to tho scene. The first scenes were from the popular comedy."Twelfth Night," and showed the haughty Olivia (Miss Marjory Martin) receiving • Viola (Miss Wemyss), who, disguised as a pago from Duke Orsino's court, had'come to plead his master's suit. Malvolio (steward to Olivia) was played by Mrs. J. Cowan;, and Maria (her waiting maid) by Miss Ailsa Dillon, who sang the two ■ songs incidental to the scene. An extract from Hamlet, in which two grave-dig-gers aro in discussion while they dig the grave, was acted by Miss Keddell, who cleverly spoke the two parts. -Miss Miriam M'Gimpsey recited Hermoine.^s defence from "Tho Winter's Tale/ and two scenes were taken, from- ''The. Merry Wives of Windsor." Mistress Page was played by Mjss M. Ahem, Mistress Ford by Mrs. G. Berry, and the page by Miss Marjorie, Butt. The passage from "Hamlet," in which the King confesses to ' himself, his guilt, was recited by Miss Hardinge-Maltby, and was greatly applauded* Two vocal duets by the Misses Webb were included in the programme. ' The accompaniments were played by Miss Packer and Miss Mavis Dillon. The costuming was also supervised by Miss Hard-inge-Maltby. A dainty supper concluded a-very successful and enjoyable evening.
