WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, This Day. A mild shock oi earthquake, was felt in Nelson at. 8,6 .p.m. on. Saturday and ivas followed by one- more- prolonged and of greater severity, but not sufficiently severe to do any damage.

Work under the No. 5 scheme of the Unemployment Board, which has . been suspended for a fortnight, was resumed to-day. "While the scheme was suspended the City Council kept the , work going, expending in all £287 18s 3d, inclusive of £61 10s 6d spent out of tlic sands loans. The wages paid wore 12s lid a day for married men and i)s a day for single men, who were given three days' work a week, a day more than is allowed under the board's scheme.

On Friday afternoon tho first round of the L.G.U. Medal and Encounter Shield round was played by the Nelson Ladies' Golf Club. The senior grade was ■•won''by Mrs. Green and tho junior by Mrs. Rout. The oflicial closing of tho season on the Nelson Croquet Club's courts took place recently, when Mrs. Renwick, the club's patroness, presented the cups and trophies that had been won during tho season as follows: —Senior open champion, Mrs. Waters; runner-up, Mrs. C. Hamilton. Junior champion, Mrs. Travers; runner-up, Miss Gilkison. Ladies' champion, Mrs. Waters; run-ner-up, Mrs. Gould. Captain's trophy, Mrs. Acheson. Newstead , Cup, presented to the club by Mrs. Renwick, Mrs. Gould. Handicap doubles (the president's prizes), Mrs. Dalglish and Mrs. Menlove. ■■
