GROSS OF SACRIFICE
FEATHERSTON MEMORIAL
UNVEILING CEREMONY
With full ceremony befitting the occasion, the Cross of Sacrifice—-the first of the kind erected in Now Zealand — was unveiled in the Featherston Soldiers' Cemetery on Saturday by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. P. A. de la Perrello). The large gathering present included Colonel M'Donald, M.P., and Mrs. M' Donald, the Mayor of Featherston, Mr. J. W. Card, and Miss Card (Mayoress), Mrs. Ball, secretary of the Feathers ton branch of the Women's National Reserve, Mr. T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, and. Mrs. Jordan, Mr. William Fesker, Mayor of Carterton, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. M'Leod, and representatives of many other local bodies of the Wairarapa district.
The Masterton Band was present, and accompanied the singing of the hymns, "Abide with Me," "O God, Our Help in Ages Past," and Kipling's "Recessional," "Lest We Forget." The band played at the termination of tho ceremony "To the Memory of the Bravo." The prayers at. the ceremony were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Durrad. The ceremony opened with the singIng of the National Anthem, afier which the Mayor (Mr. J. W, Chtd) gave an address on the spluiiflid achievements &? New Zealand soldiers in the Great War.
Unveiling tho Cross of Sacrifice, the Hon. P. A. de la Perrellc spoke feelingly of the work of Now Zealand soldiers and of the reputation they haa achieved abroad. There was no doubtthat the New Zealanders who haa served in the war had tho one aim: to protect their belovea country and to assist in keeping intact the British Empire. They 'succeeded with ths Imperial and Australian Forces in their work, the memory of which would not bo forgotten.
