SCHOOL AFFAIRS

HOUSEHOLDERS MEET

ELECTION OF COMMITTEES

School committee election meetings"held in the Wellington education district, last night were generally well attended, but in some cases lack of interest was apparent. The nominations were not sufficient to provide full committees. Satisfaction with commissioner control was expressed at The Terrace School, and its affairs were again left in tho Commissioner's hands. At Brooklyn, where affairs were controlled by two commissioners last year, the householders elected a committee. Northland. Mr. E. D. Good.presided at Northland. The annual report stated that the average attendance at. the school was now such that a committee of nine would have to be elected instead of seven as formerly. A new room had been erected to relieve the overtaxed accommodation in the main building. Although it was hoped to have additional accommodation provided so as to be able to close the lower class room, the Department was not willing to allow this to be done. A special hot water heating system had, however, been provided in the room, and the ventilation improved. As regards finance, there was a credit balance of £17 7s lid in the general account. ■ The headmaster's report stated that the average number on the roll was 107 boys and. 114 girls. The average attendance was 98 boys and 105 girls. Tho present rollwas 111 boys and 118 girls. An improved average attendance was looked for during the year. ';. The following committee was elected':1 Messrs. E. D. Good, L. H. Stool, D. G.: Cody, J. E. Adams, A. Clark, WJ Platt,. R. il. Ross, R. Barber, and J. IL.Hamp-; ton. V Although no election was necessary, only, nine nominations having been received for' the committee, there were over 50 householders at the Brooklyn school last night. The chairman was Mr. J. I. Goldsmith; who shared the duties of commissioner during the past year witli Captain Nichol-: son, the Brooklyn householders not electing a committee last year owing to -the reduction made in the Government.capitation grant. .-'.--. .-.' Mr. Goldsmith was cordially for his report on the work of the' "com--missioners during the year. '"'''■ The headmaster (Mr. Hopkirk) reported that the highest average weekly, attendance for the year was 97.1 per cent., arid the lowest 85,3 per cent.
