An important atage in the evolution of air transport was marked when Juno IV., 'an aeroplane, driven with heavy nivtor oil as fuel, was tried out successfully after twenty years' research in the- Junkers laboratory. The machine has a six-cylinder engine, of 720 horse-power, and the Diesel principle is said to increase the flying range 47 per cent., the loading capacity 10 per cent., while the working cost of the Diesel engine is 65 per -jent. below that of the petrol engine. , ■■.',.
The heavy-oil motor has been tried out both in Britain and America with a measure of success, and the Packard Diesel air-motor has been installed as standard in .some air-craft. The problem is not, however, regarded as completely solved in America. The Junkers engine has double opposed pistons, and runs on the two-stroke cycle;
