AWAPUNFS JUMPERS
REVIVAL OF INTEREST
ADDITIONS TO BRIGADE
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")' PALMERSTON N., This Day. tin the 1928-29 season Awapuni possessed a formidable array of jumpers, and for a period quite swept the board, but the centre fell from grace in , inexplicable fashion last term. However, there are indications' that the incoming winter will find a revival in jumping activities, for interest in this department IS* already brightening up. Unfortunately, one of the centre's foremost ■ hurdlers and a prospective 'chaser in Otairi has been temporarily lost to the ranks, the lameness that overtook him after •winning the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie having necessitated his being turned out for a spell on his owner's farm at Hunterville. However, as he had ■won £2075 to date this season, he was a payable enough proposition for his owner. iikyridev was slightly the worse for wear on her jetiirn from Kllerslie, a filled leg necessitating her being given a iew days in the paddock. While she .had to be ronlcnt with a second and a third at Ellerslie, they were quite promising^efforts Tvhen .her size and lack o£ acquaintance >vilh the country are taken into account. "DOC" KNAPP'S INTENTIONS. ' AVhile L. Knapp has temporarily lost liis best stake-earner by reason oE the t-onipulfeoiy absence of Otairi, it would not surprise to find him putting Llandudno over the battens, although the old fellow as quite at home on the flat when, the track conditions are heavy. Knap,., has also a promising novice in Star Girl, another daughter of Day Comet, and, a newcomer to his team in Royal.Black looks a likely sort to develop into a jumper., ■Elicit, who broke down at the Manafivatu Meeting, has been blistered, and it as also questionable whether that other good performer Locarno will'again Sport silk. However, Mrs. A. M'Donald, their trainer, has Red Fuchsia making satisfactory progress in his preparation, and she has the 'chaser Birkbeck and the hurdlers Gueress, Llyn Dv, and Spearopa to represent her in this branch of the game. Spearopa has been a big disap-' pointment to date, although ho gave better promise on the second day at Feildjng. Warzone, who has yet to make her appearance over the battens, has displayed promise in private. J. P. Coyle holds a strong hand with IMister Gamp and Skyrider. The Bronzetti gelding is revelling in his work at present, and, with Skyridor to carry his own colours in both- roles, Coyle should be found playing a part when the Great Northerns and Grand National come round. Mister Gamp won the Great Northern Hurdles in 1929, and now that Skyrider has been given an insight to the big fences at Bllerslie, she should -also bring credit to the stable. CALLAIYIART'S PROSPECTS. G. W. New has also been associated - with jumpers to some extent in the past, ' tout his activities in this direction are meantime restricted to the Cajlaghan gelding Gallamart, who runs in his own interests. Since being put to the hurdling game this gelding has performed very creditably, two firsts; two seconds, arid-a third having been his record prior, to his ibeing accorded a spell in the paddock. He is now back looking* as well as ever. . R. E. Hatch has always had a'jumper or two housed Jn his stable, but meantime the only member with qualifications in that direction is Braggart. However, •this relative to Paganelli is such a big and awkward atrider that it is more than probable that he will • never be at home in-winter conditions. In the past Hymestrason and Askari carried Hatch's colours in both hurdling and . steeplechasing, but the former had to be cqmpulsorily ' destroyed as the result of injuries he. received when racing 'at the beginning of - last season, and Askari has apparently been pensioned off, although he is such \a hardy veteran that he might be found out following the hounds once again. Lady Alophen was another who was destined for the jumping branch, but <it was decided not to persevere with hei\ Red Bank, who was a useful performer over the bnttens, hns been definitely re"tired, but there is always, the possibility of. such performers as Atar'oria, Cornorpff, ■ Democratic, Frisco Jack,. AirfqixeV Risk, Acridity, Evening Hero,.and Ho Whanga making a reappearance now'that the jumping season is approaching. Should such come about Awapuni would oncn again have a formidable army of jumpei'f.
