SCHOOL COMMITTEES
AN AMALGAMATION
RECOGNITION QUESTION
"Apparently the School Committees' Association, which has done remarkably good work in the past, cannot carry on, and -wants assistance," remarked Mr. T. !Forsyth (chairman of the Education Board), when the matter of the School Committees' - Association's amalgamation •with the Wellington Federation of Educational- Associations 'was considered at the board meeting yesterday.
Mr. Forsyth said he was sorry that the School Committees' Association had found it necessary to amalgamate. It had done exceptionally good work, and as the. committees were directly representative of the schools they had a place m the educational system. They had been of great benefit to the board. The new body would be in an entirely different position. While the views of teachers might be very helpful, the present Act did not permit the board to give the consideration to an amalgamated body that it would give to the School Committees' AssoeiaMr. J. J. Clark questioned the chairman's statement, and contended that the School Committees' Association was able to carry on. Mr. Forsytb: "The were unable to pay their debts, and they are still in that position I understand." The following resolution was carried:— "That the proposed association be informed that as the Education Act recognises only'school committees the board regrets that, much as it values the services o£ home and school associations and teachers; it is unable to accord to an association'representative of these three bodies the full recognition accorded to an association of school committees only." ■ '
