MINIMUM RATES OF PAY

The New Zealand Marine Cooks and Stewards' (Coastal Shipping Companies) Award has been filed in the Court of Arbitration. In a memorandum Mr. Justice Frazer states that the award embodies the recommendations of the Conciliation Council, and in respect of matters not agreed on in Conciliation Council it was, with a few exceptions, based on the terms of the expired award. The new award is to come into force on Ist May, and to continue in force until 31st October next.

The following are the minimum, rates of pay per month:—Chief stewards, £16 4s; chief cooks, £16 4s; _ cooksteward witn assistant or assistants, £16 4s; cook-steward where no assistant employed, £18 4s; chief stewards or chief cooks employed in vessels to carry twenty or more passengers (extra per month), £1; assistant cooks and/or stewards, £12 4s. Cadet assistant cooks and/or stewards: —Under 3 7 years of age, £8 ss; 17 to 19 years of age, £9 15s; 19 to 21 years of ago, £10 15s; stewardess, £8 16s Sd. For the purpose of calculating payments for broken periods a calendar month is to to reckoned as thirty days. The minimum monthly rates of pay for the stewards ■ and. galley stalls on the Ngaio, Araliura, and Matangi are .those, prescribed in the . respeetivo awards covering chief stewards/stewards, and galley staffs for the time being in force applicable to the vessels of a similar description operated by the Union Steam Ship Company of N,ew Zealand, Limited, but in all other rejspeets the award is to apply in the case of the stewards and galley staffs of the three steamers mentioned.'Where ■the crew numbers twelve or more the cook-steward is to be supplied with an assistant; • V-
