MINISTERS' ASSURANCE

PUTTING IT TO TEST

AUCKLAND, This Day.

"Almost every Cabinet Minister, has made the statement that no person shall be allowed to starve, and they have referred persons asking for assistance to the hospital boards," said Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Board. "This does not square with the, most recent statement of the Government that- we must drastically curtail expenditure." Mr. Wallace added that his board would frame its estimates just as if ho Government instruction • had been received. The board was- empowered to make a further levy on local bodies. It had never been done before, and if the1 board was now compelled to do it the Government would be responsible. The board would economise drastically, but by no stretch of imagination could he see the board meeting the Government's demand. He had told Mr.'Stallworthy that, as chairman of the board, he would not see any person starving-in Auckland, and Mr. Stallworthy had replied: "That is what I waut you to say." In view of that, said Mr. Wallace, he was unable to understand the Government's attitude/
