BEDS MAY BE CLOSED
(By; Telegraph;— Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Drastic economies are- being forced on the Auckland Hospital Board by the Government cuts, according to a statement by Mr. W. Wallace, chair--man .of • the board to-day.. He said that the. board' would be compelled to close beds and only admit acute surgical and medical cases. . Staff salary reductions and . retrenchment would also be imperative. . . Boferring to outdoor .relief, '.Mr. Wallace said that £59,920 was spent last year, but to comply with.the Government's instructions the board could not spend more than £32,000 this year. As far as outdoor relief, was concerned, the board would be unable to carry on for more than six months unless the Unemployment Board or the ..Government' helped it. "I am firmly of opinion that, while .many State Depart-, ments can stand the.pruning.; knife, hospital and outdoor relief should be left alone," said Mr. Wallace. "This is the first time in the history of New .Zealand, to my knowledge, that a hospital board has been forced into the position of closing beds." ... .
