BRITISH RAILWAYS

ELECTRIFICATION SCHEME

HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS

LONDON, 30th April. The Government has received proposals for a vast scheme for tho electrification of the entire railway system at a cost of £400,000,000, occupying fifteen years, and employing 60,000 men. A proposed electricity board -would provide the railways with power_ at .5 of a penny a. unit, and later possibly at A of a. penny—lower than in any country in the world. It is claimed that electrification would mean a much lower rate of depreciation, as electrical traction should have a life of 30 years, whereas that of a steam locomotive is 20 years. Since the war £500,000,000 have been spent on roadways in Britain, so the proposed £400,000,000 is reasonable. A total of £80,000,000 would be spent by the electricity board and £.320,000,000 by the railway companies.
