APPLE EXPORT TRADE

LONDON, ISth April. The Australian and New Zealand apple season has not opened' too well. The demand slo far is disappointing, though the quality of the fruit generally has been more satisfactory than was the case with the arrivals of some recent years. The apples are meeting with competition from other sources, especially- from the United States, from which country shipments continue to be very heavy. In the four weeks, ended 4th April, the aggregate shipments from North America to Europe totalled 1,720,000 boxes. As during the next ten days the prospective arrivals from all sources total nearly 400,----000 boxes, of which 232,000 came from Australia and 10,000 from New Zealand, it is hardly to be expected that prices will improve.
