REALLY PROSPEROUS!

t Holland would seem, to be the only really prosperous country in Europe, if not in the world, according to Mrs. Alex. M< Arthur, of Timaru, who has just returned from a tour, in the course of which she visited fourteen countries. France also appeared to bo prosperous, but there were signs of poverty and unemployment there that were not visible in Holland. Mrs. M' Arthur, who is much interested in education, had good opportunity of investigating American universities through a cousin in Idaho, with whom she stayed, and later wont on to Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She had heard a great deal about "gangsters" before'she visited America, but none materialised, and even in Chinatown in 'Frisco she wandered quietly and happily. A visit to Alaska was given up, as those who knew assured her that fogs would obscure everything at tho time of year that she intended to make the visit, so she went on and visited tho Netherlands, with much pleasure and profit, and a growing admiration for the commonsense and thrift of the pc/plc. Like others, Mrs. M f Arthur was impressed with tho many signs of improvements in Italy under tho rulo of Mussolini, and remarked that his home was about the style and size of many in Timaru, and that he was a regular attendant at his office at halfpast eight in the morning. Mrs. M'Arthur comes back optimistically inclined, and expects to hear of a steady improvement in tho conditions of the world. Her opinion is that in England particularly tho people are much more cheerful and optimistic than when she paid a visit a few years ago.
