ST. LEGER TO KARAPOTI

MY OWN WINS AUTUMN

(By Telegraph.) {Special to '(The Evening Post.") AVCIvLA^D, 6th. April. The second day of the Auckland Racing Club's Easter Meeting was held in dull weather; there was a light shower before noon. The course was in good condition. The totalisator handled £53,316 10s for the day, against £78,765 on the same day last -year. The total for ,the meeting was £102,317, against £153,497 last year. PURIRI PARK SCORES. ' An. interesting finish in the lifelson Handicap saw Puriri.. Park, who had made tKe running with Camp Prince, just last long enough to win from thei fast-finishing Grand Spirit, who was at a good price for second: Good Idea, always well, placed, was close up third, and Jacldy Karo was running on. in. fourth position... Puriri Park registered a smooth performance, and ' demonstrated' that his running at Awapuni, where he failed twice, was all wrong. Puriri Park is the makings of a good handicap horse, and should do well next season. Grand. Spirit struck some trouble at the five-furlongs. post, where there were only throe horses behind her, but after that she had a beautiful run on the rails*. Jenny Diver disappointed, but Spearlad was staying on solidly at the end. .- .■ ." . ' . SUCCESS OF SOLOIST. There was .a particularly good finish in the Victoria Handicap, Soloist just battling on to win 'from iloyal Artist, Peter Jackson, and Easter Time. It looked as if the other three- might head off Soloist, who had made all the running, when they ranged alongside at the distance, but he came again under his light weight and just got home. Soloist id a half-brother, by Hunting Song,- to Supremacy, and-he is sure to see a better day.. Eoyal Artist and Easter Time,, who were badly drawn at the post, both ran great races, Easter Time's effort under his big weight being extremely good. Lotus Lily made a fair showing, but was-not quite good enough. 1 LUCESS BACK TO FORM. , ilmcess, who.raced well over a country last winter, showed :a return: to form in winning the St. Helierg Hurdles. Cruachan was slightly better backed^than, the. win; ncr, and they wei'o the only ones! to have chances. Lnceas was always jumping better than Cruachan, and he outstayed mm at the end to win-fairly comfortably. High Pitch, whose rider made a remark-, able recovery at the third fehco, was amoderate third, and ' Quinsiha fourth. Eigh Pitch's rider, A. Gilmer, lumg round the horse's neck for about sixty yards before getting back into the saddle, and he was loudly, applauded. Pompenia tdl at the fir^t fence,. and Respirator at the second to last. Lucess is a splendid jumper, and he should win something good in the winter. . . . . : A MAGNIFICENT FINISH. ■ There was a magnificent finish in the Autumn Handicap; and My Own stayed on best to just* win. from Bright blow, Lady Pam wag right up third,. closely followed by/Gay Cockade and Desert _G]ow. The winner was well ridden by A. Voitre, who waited in on the, fence and.,did not come away from the raild until he .had to make a run in the- straight. Bright Glow was always.up near the pacemaker, ;■ Gay Cockade, and battled on .really : well at the finish. Lady : Pam was in the rear until half a mile from home, .when she made a forward move to be lip handy on, the outside-:at the turn.' She was-in front inside the distance, but the effort was too great, and. she weakened just near the post. Corinax was never going like a winner, but Gay Cockade, Desert Glow, and Brampton all ran good' races. Motere was) bustled along from tho start, and failed to finish on after being well up at.the'turn. STAR COMET'S STEEPLES. ' Having his first run over country, Star Comet gave a fine display of jumping to easily win the Aiitumn Steeplechase, for which Skyrjder was.a good favourite. St. Warrigal carried the ! field ' along _ until reaching the first fence on the hill in the second round, when he fell. Star Comet then took charge from Foxhound and Skyrider, and was never afterwards headed. The" winner's effort was _ very promising, and he looks like being a better steeplechaser than a hurdler. Foxhound plodded on solidly,, but Skyrider weakened at the end. She took a lot out of herself by pulling and hitting several fences hard, having a life at the first fence, where M'Donald just got back. Kamehameha baulked at the last fence, and the others all failed badly. THE ST. LEGER. ' Only^three came out to oppose Karapoti, ■who was made the hottest favourite of the meeting, in the Great Northern St. Leger. The crack three-year-old never gave anything a, chance, and when King_ March almost ran up to_ him at the foot o£ tho straight Karapoti came away to win by three lengths. Pewa was twelve lengths away third, and Hampton Pn rk last. Karapoti gave a fine exhibition of galloping, and it "was a pity that there was not something good enough to extend: him. LEITRIM JUST WINS. Two speedy beginners, Leitrim and Gold Day, got to the front quickly in the Huia Handicap, and they stayed there to the end, Leitrim just beating Gold Day. Honiton was right up third, and Silvermine almost in line fourth. Leitrim, began .with his usual brilliancy, and demonstrated that he is more solid than, formerly by staying on well in a hot finish. Gold Day confirmed his good form on the first day by running another solid race. Honiton finished on solidly on the rails, and Silvermine ran a really' good race. Snpremacy, the favourite, was never sighted* but Gold Money was running on at the end after losing a good position in:the first furlong. MERVETTE FAILS. Eaglet, at fair odds-on, was successful in the Islington Handicap, for which Mervotle was a good favourite. Chief Link and Chief Joy enrrind tiie field along to the him, where Lucky Alice, Valmiir, an.l Kn : r!.et wove li.-uu-r. home well. Cynthia ST., who made a fast run that «he was not quite able to maintain to the end, was close up third, and Chief Link fourth. jMervctte, the favour-, ite, was never dangerous, and finished in tho middle of the field.
