AT RICCARTON

BIG. EVENT TO CHARMEUSE

NOTES ON THE Ra\CING

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, 6th April. The Autumn Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was\opened in bright sunshine, but the sky clouded over later in the afternoon, when the air became cold. There was'a fair attendance, 'though there were not bo many visitors as usual. The totalisator slumped heavily. There were some good fields, and the racing was quite interesting, the Great Easter Handicap being a fine race. The totalisator investments were £31,135 10s, compared with £50,031. last year. HURDLES TO ANTRIM BOY. Antrim Boy was a pronounced favourite for the Kildare Hurdles, in the absence of Amorist, and his backers were never uneasy. Ho was in front a mile fronrhome, and thereafter was never troubled. He is a solid customer, who will keep on winning moi-o races. Aberfeldy was second at the last hurdle, where he fell heavily. This fellow his slipped badly in his form Pangolin was always one of the front lot but finished a moderate second. He is to be tried this winter over country. Cannthia was last all the way, and apparently is not ready yet to repeat last winter's form. I Tilsori, the rider of Aberfeldy, was taken to the hospital suffering from a slight concussion, but he returned to the course later in the day. CHAMPAGNE STAKES. Golden 'Wings and Cricket. Bat disputed favouritism in the: Champagne Stakes. They were always prominent, as >were Esteem and Fair Weather, the next: best fancied. Golden Wings was ' out well clear after going a furlong, however, and led a procession the rest, of .the way, to win easily. The other three had a good contest for the places, ■ Cricket ;Bat■• staying on well to beat Fair Weather by half a length, while a head away came -Esteem, who .put in a strong run over the final furlong, only to stop in the last couple of strides. The others, headed by Last March, were a long way back. The superiority oE Golden Wings was marked, while Cricket Bat ran another solid race. He may go well in the Challenge Stakes with his light weight. AUTUMN TO SHARP THORN. Ah." Laddie was slightly better backed than Juniper in the Autumn Plate. Juni£er was always in the picture, but Air addie never looked like a winner, though he was finishing on in fifth place. Night Recital was the leader • for sis furlongs, when he was in trouble, Adelpbi retiring quickly about the same, spot. . Juniper and Sharp Thorn;took charge when the early leaders dropped out.:in the straight, and had the finish to themselves. Sharp Thorn stayed on a little too well for Juniper, the pair both showing good form. The Bailiff was always well pluced, and Shatter was doing good work over the final stages. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. Chief Cook was a,hpt favourite for the Russley Plate. Waiweiie and Gallant Fox were the first to'become prominent, and they led to the course .pyoper, where Chief Co.ok and Azalea'were showing up in the nest bunch. Gallant Fox was out clear below the distance, and won easily by two lengths. Waiwene tired in the run home, and Chief Cook got.up. on/the post to beat her for second money. ■ Azalea hung on to get fourth, with-; Convoy, Zeebrugge, and Boundary Hit next;: Gallant Fox, by Hunting Song, is a:- bold -galloper, likely to be a good three-year-old; Chief Cook ran a sound race. ; Waiweiie will improve with racing. .!; ;.; . ; THE GREAT EASTER. The scratching:-of-Nightmarch, who was withdrawn at 9.25 this morning, left thirteen runners for the.Great Easter Handicap. Blue Paper was in front after a furlong, with Great Star; Arrow Lad, and Chrysology next, while Autopay, after being one of the smartest beginners, soon lost-Iris place; ' They! ran without much change to .the home turn, where Mount Boa and Charmeuse nioved up. Blue Paper, and Arrow Lad were beaten when fairly in the straight, leaving Charmeuse and Mount Boa to join Great Star in the lead, with Chrysology handy. Charmeuse finished best and won by nearly a length from Great Star, who beat Mount Boa py a head. Chrysology was close up, with Arrow Lad next. The winner's performance was impressive, as she finished on strongly. Great Star also ran a solid race, repeating his effort of two years ago. Mount Boa did not quite sustain his run, but registered a fine performance, as ho and Charmeuse came from a long way back. Arrow Lad disappointed over the. last two furlongs,,while Autopay was never prominent, after losing his position early. Palermo and Silver Paper never got in the picture. Full Feather was last most of the way. Limerick was just in front of him for half a mile, and then xsut in a useful .finishing run. .. m FIRST SELLING RACE FOR YEARS. The Gimcracli Handicap, the first selling race at Riccarton for many years, attracted nine starters. Grand Acre led most of the way, but Wise Choice .cut him down easily in the run home.' Coroner was one of the frqnt division to the distance, where he seemed to be going well, but he stopped like a bad horse.' Muff ran a good race to get third, after being slow to begin. The. winner was sold for 100 guineas to Mr. M. P. Corliss, of New Brighton, and has gone into R. Ellis's stable. ■ ' BLACK DUKE IMPRESSIVE. Spoon was always favourite for the Sockburn Handicap, but she disappointed. She and Ball Dress were responsible for the pace to the straight, where Spoon col-; lapsed. Black Duke, who had always been handy, then joined Ball Dress, in the lead, with Semper Paratus just behind them, and apparently going well. Black Duke was travelling comfortably, however, ami he beat Ball Dress easily. Semper Paratus failed in the run home, and Night Effort got up to cut him out of third money. Black Duke appears to thrive t on racing and travelling, and ho won in impressive fashion. COURTENAY HANDICAP. The Dove and Al Jolscm were responsible Tor the pace in the Courtenay Handicap, True Shaft following them to the straight, whore all three wore in trouble. First Raid then shot through on the rails, with Meprisant in pursuit, and First Raid lasted long enough to win by nearly a. length. True Shaft aDd Al Jolson followed at two lengths intervals, their performp.nrc.s lining disappointing. This was the best race

First Raid has run for some time. Meprisant was staying on. - Itosults in' detail :— Kildaro Hurdle Handicap, of 200 snvs; ono mile arid tliree-aiiarters. —1 Antrim Boy. .10.11 (Mackic), 1; 4 Pangolin, 9.13, 2: ti Orillamb, 0.0, 3.
