AMERICAN FOOTBALL COACH

TRAGIC AIR DISASTER

NEW YORK, 31st March. A message from Bazaar, Kansas, says that two pilots and six passengers were killed in ono of the worst American air disasters when a trans-Contin-ental aeroplane! bound for Los Angeles from Kansas City crashed in flames at Bazaar. The cause of the crash is a mystery. The tragedy is heightened. by the fact, that ono of the unfortunate passengers was Knuto • Boeknc ("The Rock"), brilliant football coach of the Notre. Dame University, whose loss is felt deeply throughout the country. In addition to his colourful personality, he probably did more than anyone to produce and popularise the present type of American football. National honours probably will be accorded the coach. University presidents, students, army and navy officials, and persons in all walks of lifeare expressing profound grief at his death. Notre Dame especially is stunned by the blow, for their football teams, "The Irish," under Roekne's guidance, for, many seasons won a.reputation as national champions, defeating all comers with an exhibition of virtually perfect play. The officials of one prominent university stated that American football, had suffered a vital blow by Roeknu's dciif.li. A representative of another »:ollcs« said: "Football in particular and athletics in general have lost ono, of the. greatest oi: educators, men, and builders ever known in Hie history of sport."
