RELIEF FOR MORTGAGORS

GOVERNMENT'S DECISION

The Government's intention, to make the provisions of the Mortgagors Belief Bill retrospective was announced last night by the Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes), who stated that from information conveyed to him it would appear that there was a probability of some mortgagees taking advantag'o of the delay in the passing of the measure in Parliament, and thereby inflicting hardship on mortgagors. In view of these circumstances Mr. Forbes stated that he intended to introduco an amendment whereby tho Bill would be deemed to have come into, force on the 18th day of March, the date of its introduction into Parliament. "Further," said the Prime Minister, "it is proposed to extend the scope of tho Bill so as to empower the Court to prevent any judgment or order of any Court in civil jurisdiction obtained by a mortgagee being executed against any property whatsoever of the mortgagor, and also to prevent any such judgment being enforced by bankruptcy proceedings." At the same time, in order that fresh advances may not be held up, Mr. Forbes stated that the Bill would not apply to mortgages executed after the date from which the Bill will be deemed to have come into force—i.e., 18th March.
