THE WAITANGI BORE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNEy 31st March. The Taranaki Oil Company's report is as follows:—"Waitangi No. 1 well: Beaming hole at 950 feet; progress slow. Operations ; during the last 48 hours indicate an unexpected difficulty in keeping the hole open, and the chance of reaching the objective depth is thereby diminished. Now investigating the advisability of drilling another well in proximity to the present site rather than incur the further delay which appears to be involved in deep-ening-the Waitangi No. 1 welL Expect to make a decision this week. Full knowledge of the strata gained by recent drilling should ensure rapid sinking of a new hole by rotary plant because drilling can proceed without the delays, necessarily incurred previously by running a core barrel to fully investigate- and test tho strata: passed through-.to-'this depth, attained, namely 1682 tfee-t. The company's geologist is definitely of opinion that the first objective stands still below that depth. In the opinion of the management the prospects of a new hole reaching the objective: are much better with, the benefit p£ the experience now had jon the Waitangi structure. • ...'■■
