REPLY TO PROTESTS
LANG EXPLAINS WHY
OUR OWN PEOPLE FIRST
SYDNEY, 27th March,
Replying to widespread protests against his announced intentipn to default in the payment of interest on | British loans, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr. J. T. Lang, states:— "It is idle for the Prime Minister to express dismay at the inability of New South Wales to meet tho interest payments duo overseas. All the Australian Governments were very definitely informed by me at Canberra that this Government would not be able to meet its interest payments at the end of this month. "As a Government, we have had to choose between cutting down our dole, closing our unemployed relief works, and restricting our social works to pay our interest; or avoiding our interest ! payments and devoting the money to the relief of distress among tho unemployed. We have unhesitatingly chosen to stick to tho people of our own State in preference to the overseas bondholders."
