WATER SUPPLY

UPPER HUTT'S NEW SCHEME

Without blowing trumpets or waving of banners, tho Borough of Upper Hutt recently inaugurated a new ami entirely efficient water supply. Finding that the old storage tank of '55,000 gallons was quite inadequate to supply tho growing needs of 3500 residents, the Borough Council made arrangements for both an increased supply and an increased pressure, and at the same time improved the reticulation of the district to comply with the underwriters' regulation, in order to qualify for a reduced rate of insurance premiums. > Two loans were raised —one of £.10,000 for reticulation purposes and the other of £5800 for a new reservoir. Tho new supply comes from a tributary of Hutt River near the first Akatarawa bridge, and about a quarter of a mile higher up tho gully, from which the old supply comes. This reservoir was designed by Mr. H. F. Toogood, and tho work w:is carried out by Mr, M. Of. Templeton. Jts capacity is 10,000,000 gallons. Tho wall of the reservoir is in places usft high. Tho reticulation loan lias enabled the | council to lift all the old IJin mains and most of the 3in mains, which have been replaced by 4in and Gin pipes. Tho new services will give a pressure in the town of at least 1001b.
