ATTITUDE OF BANKS

OUTLOOK BRIGHTER

REPUDIATION RESISTED

(Eeceived 27th March, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 26th March. Mr. Gilliat, presiding at the Bank of Australasia meeting, said:,"The bank, ■while it will not assist any financial schemes which it believes would be detrimental to Australia, is prepared to do the utmost in conjunction with other trading banks, to help Australia to get its' house in order. The general outlook iir Australia is somewhat brighter, as there is evidence of increased resistance to proposals based on the evasion-of the country's commitments, butt here is a long road to travel before the goal is reached, namely, a return to conservative expenditure on the part of the State. There has recently been a great deal of Press correspondence upon Australia's position, and in many cases a certain amount of insidious propaganda iii the matter of her national honour, but Australia's troubles should' be regarded as part of a world-wide depression. Her position will improve with the rest of the world, and adverse criticism should not seek out one country for special comment."
