LIBERAL AND LABOUR

PARTY INDEPENDENT

CO-OPERATION ONLY

(BritlsU Official Wireless.) (Received 27th March, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, 26th March. Addressing Liberal candidates to-day regarding the attitude of the Liberals to the Government, Mr. Lloyd George said that the declaration he recommended was that they should pursue a policy of co-operation and not of frustration and should declare, first of all, for the complete independence of their party as a basis of action. There could be no surrender of the independence of the Liberal Party, but there should be co-operation and an understanding with the Government of the day for the carrying out of measures common to both parties on progressive lines.' They were asking for no sacrifice of principle on the part of the Labour Party, and were proffering no surrender of principle on the part of the Liberal Party. Every effort should be made to effect a settlement of the Indian problems, while the free trade policy hitherto pursued by tho Government should be supported. They were willing to run risks as a party for the sake of such aims us peace and disarmament, harmony in India., and a more energetic unemployment policy. He expressed tho view that if tho Government^ were turned out at present a protectionist Government would probably come into power. Replying to questions, Mr. Lloyd George said that ho did not know what the attitude of tho Government would be on the declaration.
